a kind of burial

the first community is earth

This MA performance piece is a response to the problems of the way the concept of “community” is used to mask conflict, exclusion, hierarchies and violence.

If we start in the Earth we are at the beginning of awareness.

It is also a place of “death” – reabsorption, reintegration. We are from the Earth and we return to it. The soil is full of microbes, worms, life. The weight of the turf soothes and holds the body. Referencing the many women artists who perform with Earth, Ana Mendieta who died young falling from a window, her partner accused but released, a possible murder covered up. Traces of the body, half in the world, mostly invisible – the erasure of the feminine, the temporality of being. What is “community” if the body is not safe among others? Where do we find that safety? How do we find trust, let ourselves be in the world without flinching? A Burial is a movement towards responding to this problematic.
